You can prove who you are using photo ID or your PIN document for your GP surgery’s online services.
You'll need to prove who you are before you can:
- book and manage appointments
- order repeat prescriptions
- view your health record
- securely manage your organ donation decision
- view your NHS number
Without full access you can:
- search conditions and treatments
- use NHS 111 online.
- get advice about coronavirus
NHS login registrations may take longer than usual when there are high numbers of requests. Registrations will be processed as soon as possible.

If your registration is rejected
For security reasons, we aren't always able to advise why your identity check has been rejected.
Common reasons include:
- The submitted photograph of your I.D. not being clear. Ensure all four edges of your ID are in the photo, that none of the ID is covered by your fingers and that none of the text is blurry
- The information submitted on your ID not matching the information on your medical record. Please ensure your GP practice holds up to date information, and that your ID shows your current name and address
- Your ID being invalid. Ensure that it is not expired and that it is one of the following forms of ID: A passport, a UK driving licence (full or provisional), a European driving licence (full only) or a European national identity card
- Your video not being clear. Ensure that the video has sound, that all four numbers can be clearly heard, are in the correct order, and make sure that you cannot hear anything other than the four numbers being read out
You can try the process again with the above points in mind.
If you continue to experience issues with this process, we recommend you obtain a PIN document for online services from your GP surgery (account ID, ODS code and Linkage key) which will allow you to register without having to use the photo/video method.

If you do not have Photo ID
We take the security of your account very seriously. Before you can access all services in your NHS account, you'll need to prove who you are. This is to keep your health information safe and secure. To comply with the law and to protect you we will need to link your GP record to one of the below - it will need to be in the same name and show the same date of birth that we have on file for you.
To register using the app, you'll need 1 of the following:
- UK or European driving licence
- Passport
- European national identity card
There is an alternative way to register, if you can contact your GP surgery and ask for a PIN document for their "GP online services":
- Linkage key - also called a 'third-party passphrase'
- ODS code
- Account ID
This is normally a letter that the reception team can issue. Your GP surgery will ask you to prove who you are with at least one document of identification.
