How to access the NHS e-Referral Service
There are three ways to access the e-Referral service.
1. Using an email link
You may have been sent an email with a link to click on from the NHS e-Referral service. This will come from 'NHS Referrals'.
Select the link provided in the email. This will open the NHS App or NHS website (depending on your device). Log in to your account as usual, then the NHS e-Referral service will open.
From the e-Referral Service page:
- Find the referral appointment you'd like to book, then select Choose an appointment.

2. From your NHS App homepage

- Select Hospital referrals and appointments.
- Find the referral appointment that's ready to book and click on the card.

How to cancel your appointment
Cancelling in the NHS App

- Then select Cancel appointment.

I can’t see my appointment
Only active referrals can be seen, such as:
- appointments you still need to book
- booked appointments that haven’t happened yet
- deferred referrals, where you are waiting for an appointment
If you need help with an appointment you cannot see, you should contact your referrer (usually your GP) or the organisation dealing with your appointment.
If you've been referred to a specialist through the NHS e-Referral Service, you can book, view, or cancel your first appointment in your NHS account.
Our support team cannot book, check, change or cancel any appointments using e-RS - we can only help with technical issues relating to the NHS account itself.
Hospital appointments are not currently available via Linked profiles/Proxy access. This may change in future.
Patients under 16 years old are currently unable to view their appointments via the NHS App. These can however be accessed via the link to the referral service provider if available. For more information, please contact the patient's local NHS Trust or GP surgery.
What can I see and do in this section?
You can only manage your first referral appointment in your NHS account.
You can book hospital appointments through your NHS account if you have been referred through the NHS e-Referral Service.
You cannot manage any further appointments for an existing referral.
You will need to do this directly with the specialist you're being referred to.
You can manage multiple referrals at any time, as long as they are first appointments.
